The Kerala government and the KGMOA have reached a consensus to roll out 24/7 specialist services in district and general hospitals. Consequently, both parties resolved earlier differences regarding doctor redeployment and workforce management across state healthcare centers.

Health Minister K Muraleedharan held high-level discussions with KGMOA representatives to finalize the operational framework. During the meeting, the government assured the association that it will fill vacant specialist posts promptly. Previously, KGMOA expressed serious concerns over shifting doctors from primary health centres without creating fresh posts. However, the state government clarified that it will seek individual doctor consent before any transfer occurs. Under the agreed model, hospitals will provide on-site specialist coverage between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM. Thereafter, teleconsultation services and an on-call specialist roster will handle emergency care from 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM. Moreover, the state will ensure a minimum of nine specialist doctors for each designated specialty in these hospitals.
Initially, Punalur Government Hospital will implement this comprehensive round-the-clock specialty care model. The program covers key disciplines, including orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, general medicine, and general surgery. As a result, patients can access timely specialist interventions closer to home without unnecessary referrals to tertiary medical colleges.
