Odisha’s Health Minister, Mukesh Mahaling, recently announced significant progress in the state’s healthcare landscape. Specifically, he highlighted the impressive performance of Odisha health schemes, namely the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) and the Gopabandhu Jana Arogya Yojana (GJAY). Notably, more than 2.6 lakh individuals have received treatment under these initiatives since April 11 this year. Consequently, this demonstrates the government’s commitment to expanding healthcare access for its citizens.

Boosting Healthcare Access with Converged Odisha Health Schemes

Odisha has quickly ascended to the second position nationwide in terms of enrollment under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. This remarkable achievement, as stated by Minister Mahaling, directly refutes opposition claims regarding the scheme’s efficacy in the state. Furthermore, Odisha has also secured the second position in delivering benefits under both the Ayushman Bharat and Gopabandhu Jana Arogya Yojana combined. This success underscores the state government’s dedication to robust healthcare initiatives. Additionally, the unified scheme aims to cover approximately 1.03 crore families, translating to 3.46 crore individuals across Odisha.

Understanding Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY and Gopabandhu Yojana

The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) stands as the world’s largest health assurance scheme. It provides a health cover of Rs 5 lakh per family annually for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization to over 12 crore poor and vulnerable families across India. This ensures cashless treatment at empanelled hospitals. On April 11, Union Minister JP Nadda and Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi jointly launched this converged scheme in Cuttack, officially integrating Ayushman Bharat with the state’s existing Gopabandhu Jan Arogya Yojana.

Comprehensive Benefits and Future Outlook

The Gopabandhu Jan Arogya Yojana (GJAY), previously known as Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana, offers free healthcare support. It provides financial assistance up to Rs 7 lakh for rural beneficiaries and Rs 6 lakh for urban beneficiaries for medical costs. Significantly, beneficiaries can access treatment not only within Odisha but also at selected empanelled hospitals outside the state. This comprehensive coverage includes medical examinations, consultations, diagnostic tests, and hospitalization expenses, alleviating financial burdens on families. Moreover, the state government plans to establish new medical colleges, further strengthening healthcare infrastructure.
