The National Medical Commission (NMC) has recently taken stringent action against numerous medical colleges in West Bengal. Specifically, 71 institutions, both government and private, received show cause notices over the past two academic years. These significant NMC medical college notices highlight critical deficiencies concerning faculty, infrastructure, and other vital clinical parameters.

NMC Action: Academic Years 2024-25 and 2025-26

Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Anupriya Patel, confirmed these regulatory actions in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha. Consequently, 34 medical colleges faced notices in the academic year 2024-25, and an additional 37 colleges received them in 2025-26. Therefore, the NMC imposed monetary penalties on some colleges for the 2024-25 academic year, depending on the nature of their shortcomings. Furthermore, for the academic year 2025-26, the NMC granted conditional renewal of MBBS seats based on the compliance reports submitted by the colleges.

Crackdown on Unauthorized Institutions

Notably, the NMC also identified Sanjiban Hospital and Medical College in West Bengal for operating without the necessary approvals. An advisory note was issued on May 19, cautioning stakeholders against unauthorized medical colleges misleading students with false recognition claims. Thus, the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) of NMC has proactively issued alerts across the country, aiming to protect students and parents from illegal admissions.

Maintaining Standards in Medical Education

The Post Graduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB) of NMC similarly scrutinized recognition and renewal applications for 2022. It observed deficiencies primarily in faculty and infrastructure, resulting in penalties for some colleges through seat reductions for the 2024-25 academic year.  These actions fall under the provisions of the Maintenance of Standards of Medical Education Regulations (MSMER-2023) and the erstwhile Post Graduate Medical Education Regulations (PGMER-2000). Ultimately, these regulatory measures emphasize the NMC’s commitment to ensuring high-quality medical education and upholding ethical standards across India.
